Hi Cringers,
How often do you see yourself?
And I don’t mean see yourself in the mirror or with a selfie cam (put it down). I mean see your way of thinking, speaking, and behaving?
If you’re like most people, the answer is probably not very often.
It’s hard to do.
One of the challenges is that we are all quite literally in our own heads.
We don’t get much of a break. It’s 24/7 with us. Stage 5 clingers.
When we aren’t engaging with the outside world, we’re in our internal muck, getting fixated on our to-do lists, or trying to remember the name of that song we heard that one time at that one place with so-and-so.
And sure, you might meditate or journal, but even then you are seeing yourself introspectively, from the perspective of you writing for you about you or you observing your thoughts without outside feedback.
We can get stuck in these internal feedback loops that limit our ability to move ahead and achieve our goals.
That’s why getting into a regular public creative practice can be so beneficial.
What would happen if you started putting yourself into the world through writing, audio, or video? What would you focus on? How would you convey your message? Who would respond to it? And how?
When you regularly create, you put snapshots of yourself into the world that you and others can interact with.
You’re preserving yourself at a particular moment in time, which allows you to take a step back and see yourself with more objective eyes.
Creating regularly forces you to self-observe, for better or worse.
On top of that, you must confront others’ expectations of you, what they want you to be, how they want to see you, and how your projection does or doesn’t match their image of you.
Sometimes you discover new aspects of yourself based on feedback from others or you learn something about others based on their reflection of you.
Creating isn’t just about likes and leads; it can also be about creating yourself and connecting with others in deeper ways.

Loved this. The idea of creating space between ourselves and our thoughts is so powerful and honestly so hard to do sometimes. I really appreciate how you framed self-distancing as a way to get clarity without disconnecting from ourselves. So much to think about here. Thanks for sharing!
