Why it pays to stay human

Have you noticed the Internet is getting weirder?

And by weird I mean shitty, “a great enshittening,” as author Cory Doctorow aptly put it.

There are the bots, the AI-generated influencers, the deep fakes, the scammers, the trolls, and the pages upon pages of disinformation and conspiracy theories (Dead Internet Theory anyone?).

In the next few years, it may be near impossible to tell fact from fiction, as if it isn’t already hard enough.

All this is to say that now is the time to claim your personhood online because soon we might not be able to tell the difference between you and the Meta AI avatar of you.

On top of that, creators have more access to content creation tools that make it quick and easy to create text, images, and videos on a mass scale.

Social networks are about to get a whole lot noisier. There will be no shortage of content, meaning it will become increasingly harder to get noticed.

So, if you’ve been dragging your feet on building your reputation online, now is the time to do it.

Use your humanness to your advantage. With the rise of fake is a rising desire for the real.

I’ve seen this play out in what people gravitate towards on social. Often it’s not the polished videos that perform best, but the vertical phone videos, the car rants, the off-the-cuff observations.

Real and conversational stands out.

That’s why I’m all about working with people to bring their real selves to how they show up online.

This means encouraging people to be real in the stories they tell and the ways they communicate and build relationships.

LinkedIn is the best social platform I know of to do this. For one there is no anonymity. Each user has a name and image (though some bots do slip through). It’s also connected to work, which limits the trolling and rudeness to an extent.

Most people I connect with on LinkedIn are real people. I’ve talked with them on the phone, worked with them, and feel like I know them in a real way.
